Reducing Non-Operative Time: Methods and Impact on Operating Room Economics (International Journal of Healthcare Technology and Management to appear in the May 2008 Issue)

By analyzing several recent studies to improve OR Throughput by reducing Non-Operative Time, Dan Krupka, Shashi Sathaye and Warren Sandberg identify five different methods and estimate the potential impact of the methods on time saved and on the hospital’s incremental contribution margin. The article should be particularly useful for executives and managers who are contemplating alternative methods to increase the productivity of their ORs. Making Stretcher Tables Work in Your Facility (Outpatient Surgery Magazine, February 2008)

Stretcher tables, mobile OR tables mobile OR table tops all can increase OR productivity and save backs by reducing patient transfers. However, as Dan Krupka and Peter Logue point out, complementary processes need to be implemented for a hospital to derive the full operational and financial benefits. Increasing OR Productivity through Technology and Complementary Processes (AdvaMed, October 2007)

As a member of the Panel on the Operating Room for the 21st Century, Dan Krupka presents an example of a technology that helps to make ORs more productive by reducing Non-Operative Time. He then goes on to stress the importance of introducing complementary process changes to get the most out of the investment in the technology. Finally, he suggests steps that management should take to ensure the ongoing impact of the technology.
